Karen Akester graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 with a Master of Design in Glass and since then has continued to practice as an artist, exhibitng work throughout the UK and Europe.
Recent work has focused on sculpture in glass, metal and wood. In these pieces I aim to encapsulate a particular moment in time, usually sprung from a childhood memory, which I attempt to distil into a narrative. I look at th complex social groupings of children and find there an individuals response to their society. The awkward, lost looking figures can find themselves in situations both farcical and distressing. The works infused with my own memories borrow much from folklore, literature and found imagery.
