Always enjoyed being creative, I decided on retirement to do something really exciting. Enrolled to a 1 year Glass Technique Diploma course 2010 and found I loved it, now I am happy working in my studio.
The transparency of the glass creating surprising effects with natural lights inspires me. The glass magnifies or distorts images and puts them into a dreamlike state. The childlike effect glass has on me is infectious and boundaries are always stretched by me and glass artists that makes the whole industry fascinating. I love to cross pollinate between kilnformed glass and the hotshop.
Dr Fiona Wilkes‘ work explores the boundaries between traditional print, digital and glass languages which are research and production based, adopting a multi-disciplinary approach and focus on the interrelation between imagery, identity and memory.
Practice-based projects include national and international educational projects, residencies and workshops working with museums, galleries and organisations in the UK, Caribbean and South America. Fiona has exhibited widely including solo and group shows (Kettle’s Yard Gallery, Gallery A, Tate Modern, Lethaby Gallery, Horniman Museum, National Art Gallery Guyana).
