Glass exhibition in Detroit area said to be one of the best in the world

Now in its sixth decade, the gallery is home this summer to “Glass52, The International Glass Exhibition,” described as one of the world’s most significant presentations of studio glass art.

Habatat Galleries is in Royal Oak.

Works by more than 100 international artists deliver a colorful range of glassworks, demonstrations and discussions.

The gallery was founded in 1971 by Schey’s stepfather, Ferdinand Hampson, and has been owned and operated since 2013 by Schey and Hampson’s son and Schey’s step-brother, Corey Hampson.

The international show opened in May and features works by local, state, national and international artists. Among those is Ryan Thompson, lead artist at the Greenfield Village Glass Shop and a featured competitor among gifted glass artists in the Netflix series, “Blown Away.”

Other participants include legendary Michigan artist Herb Babcock and artists from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Japan, Denmark and more.

The show is one of two glass exhibits underway in metropolitan Detroit. Through June 26, the Janice Charach Gallery and Michigan Hot Glass are presenting the 5th Michigan Regional Glass Exhibition and Sale.
