Quite an old piece but I didn't want to part with it before, as it's a start to a journey in glass that I haven't yet had time to develop, but one that I would definitely like to continue.

Title:Mexican Day of the Dead

Description: This piece of work was made during a week-long workshop at Bullseye Glass in Portland Oregon in 2006. I had travelled from the UK, first to Mexico City and then through Mexico, and on northwards by train in the US. I was inspired by all the colours and imagery in Mexico, particularly by the striped blankets, and celebration of the ancestors. The glass was, if I remember, 9 layers of clear sheet glass, with lampworked parts of the skeleton fused into different layers, and the 'blanket' made from stringers on the base layer. It is heavy!

Title:Smudge Collection

Description: After having won a scholarship to do a Masters Degree in Glass Product Design, I moved to Edinburgh where the scholarship was to take place at Edinburgh Crystal, with visits to the University on a regular basis.

I was quickly fascinated by the traditions, sooty smells, clatter and noise and vibrance of the glassblowing teams. Having already worked in a glassblowing studio in The Isle of Wight, I wishes to combine skills and overlap these with learning from the incredible master blowers in the factory.

The resulting collections were blown and also centrifuged, before being cut and polished by the skilled cutters. My passion for working together with craftsmen is something that has never left me.

Title:Embodiment

Description: 'Embodiment' considers the idea of the Self that continues to ‘be’ despite every moment, every experience, every encounter that takes bits of the body away. In this work, the Self is removed from myself as both the maker and the model. The piece is a casting, a type of self-portrait, and a shell of myself all at once. I made a cast of my torso and then used that as a mould for my own modified pâte de verre technique to create a lacey, extremely light glass work, pushing the material to its limits for holding the form. For me, after a year of the pandemic, this piece has taken on new meanings connected to constant thoughts of the heath, fragility, and temporality of the body juxtaposed with contemplation on the strength and resilience of the Self. I like to display this piece by hanging it from one translucent strand of wire, allowing it to turn the draughts of air and enabling light to catch the unique qualities of the aventurine blue glass, changing the viewer’s perspective.
