“Graduates Work the Next Generation”- curated by The Contemporary Glass Society

This exhibition aims to show the ingenuity and breadth of work from the next generation of makers. Due to Covid 19 and the disruption of course work last year, all students graduating from a British & Irish accredited course in 2020 and 2021 were be eligible to enter this show.

27 (plus 1 belated) extraordinary glass graduates boast an eclectic array of glass art that has never been shown like this before!

CGS are extremely proud to be exhibiting both these glass graduates and their work in this format for the first time.

11th October – 20th November 2021, then permanently in the CGS online gallery.

Title:Meandering lines

Description: Growing up I found communication extremely difficult. I had a very pronounced lisp as a child, and spent several years in speech therapy. In addition I am extremely dyslexic, which leads me to having a fascination with communication and understanding and a strong desire to express myself.
In this piece I implemented times tables patterns for the linear designs and the chaos of kiln gods who helped to manipulate the overall shape into something more than I originally planned. This piece has changed several times in an organic way as the materials demanded.

Title:A Love Letter To Myself

Description: This theme aims to think about the existence of the artist’s herself. In daily life, she has a lot of roles, such as a daughter, a sister, a student and etc. So she thinks ‘Wei Ding’ is also a role for herself in some sense, but she feels a little bit confused about what is its responsibility? Or how to perform it well? So she wrote diaries to record her thoughts and found out the trace of ‘Wei Ding’. As De Botton and Armstrong said, “Art is the media through which we came to know ourselves.”

Title:Natural Fluidity

Description: This project stemmed from my dissertation where I researched how nature and mindfulness combined could positively benefit one’s creativity. Through my piece, the aim is for the user/interactor to pause and perhaps experience a moment or more of mindful thought and perhaps release some of their innate creativity.
It seemed a natural progression for me to want to represent the ‘mindful breath’ which is an established part of meditative practice.This symbolized for me how this work should be made.

Description: Untethered embodies the contradictions in life. The glass signifies clarity, weightlessness and the sublime. The metal shows unease, permanency and the disjointedness of our existence. Title:The Four Seasons

Description: The four overlayered, fused and polished blocks are inspired by the four seasons. A lino carved design of woodland printed in the glass is the link along the year through the variations of colours of each season represented by the choices of different colours, types of glass, or techniques as sandblasting to achieve different effects.

Title:Unknown

Description: Yixue Yang’s inspiration comes from the objects abandoned by people. When they are 'useless', thrown away, trodden, Yixue thinks they are genuine and sincere as they are transformed. Anish Kapoor believes, ‘the physical object has a counterpart, a non-physical one, and its physical self does not limit it. Meanwhile, people could regard their bodies as an object. We occupy our physical bodies, but we are not just what we look like.’ The non-physical one is the essence of ‘being’, which is a void.

‘Broken Body of a Bloated Beast’ 2021

‘Unstained Youth’ 2021
(Mould blown glass, life cast, sandblasted, iron filings, sediment)
This series features life-sized female body forms casted from the artist herself and mould blown using glass. These three pieces (left to right) ‘Outgrown Home’, ‘Broken Body of a Bloated Beast’ and ‘Unstained Youth’ express the progression of the self from childhood through to puberty. The series was inspired by how it feels to suddenly be faced with dealing with your monthly menstrual cycle and how it can impact the self and body.
This sculptural interpretation of the struggles which come with menstruation aims to initiate and encourage everyone of all genders and ages to share their own experiences and learn from others.

Title:Support System

Description: Support System is a pair of companion pieces that form part of my Fragments series. Originally part of a larger piece that failed, the broken pieces are a physical record of the risks I take in the hot shop. The broken pieces were angled and sharp, revealing the depth of the kiln-formed pattern within, so I decided to utilise these breaks and finish the objects as though the breaks were always intended to be there.
They are jewel-like, imperfect in their irregularity but polished to a full shine. I feel like they’re saying, ‘We tried, we failed; but we showed up anyway.’ The parallel of that feeling to how I feel about my experience of motherhood (which is a big driver behind my practice) was obvious and easy to align. I feel these polished fragments quite literally stand up proudly holding space for the reality of processing difficult experiences, feeling like a failure, and then still showing up.

Title:Coursing Onward

Description: Inspired by the pulling, twisting an extruding of Blackpool rock sweets. This collection nods to personal new beginnings, moving forward and going with the flow. Being lost in the vastness and finding comfort in coursing patterns. The forms connect with disjointed and conflicting emotions.

Title:Gunnera Manicata 2021

Description: I think about the shelf life of the objects I produce and with that in mind, I minimise waste and/or use waste materials. Gunnera Manicata is made of 6.5Kgs of Gordon’s Gin bottles. This concern is rather more ethical than it is conceptual. I want to bring the outside in rather than impose on nature. To a certain extent, I am remediating nature in the hope that my output will draw attention to our natural surroundings. I went about casting various textures of a dead Gunnera leaf.

Title:500 Steps : Center & Balance

Description: My project began as a process of taking 500 steps to the beach & creatively stacking indigenous rocks in a meditative manner. Incorporating cast glass rocks as a means I captured a light source within the stacked sculptures. I photographed the sculptures & these photographs became my final pieces.

Title:Allison

Description: Traditional leaded stained glass panel created using acid etched flashed glass, vitreous paints and enamels, hire fire stain, glue chipped texturing and 24crt & 22crt gold leaf water gilding. The panel is installed into a black framed dimmable LED light box.
This panel was commissioned in memory of Allison, who lost her fight with cancer. Having spent time speaking with the client, and listening to the many wonderful stories of Allison, I worked on designs that captured those aspects of her life that were important to her and which resonate her personality:
Yellow roses – These were Allison’s favourite flower and featured in her wedding bouquet
Family names and relevant dates have been entwined into the flourishing rose bush background
VW logo – her love of the classic camper van
Candles – a gift guaranteed to bring a smile to her face
Nice cakes – all friends and family associated a good day out with Allison would involve quality cakes.
Bumble bee – the logo for the Beatson Cancer Centre, Glasgow where Allison received her treatment and for whom she and her friends and family assisted with fund raising
Neck scarves – Allison had a scarf for every occasion, another gift idea
The overall design reflects the client’s interest in the art deco era, and with Alphonse Mucha after their visit to Prague. This design created a foil for so many disparate elements to be combined into a pleasing and respectful aesthetic, which reflects her life and personality.

Description: Historically the Paisley design stems from Indian embroidery motifs, handed down through generations of families. It is a stylised depiction of a mango, the national fruit of India.

Although it is of Indian origin, the Paisley was named in Scotland which to me represents the changing nature of design and how it can be translated across cultures.

Description: Happiness Diary' is a series of artwork, which ultimately focuses on the idea of 'seeking and valuing happiness'.
I believe people often hide their true emotions and personalities. There are many reasons for people hiding their true feelings. But, I argue, one of the most plausible reasons could be that none of us willingly expose their weakness or vulnerabilities.

Title:Take a Breath

Description: This blown glass is part of a series with different ergonomic structures to fit into the hands of the user to initiate a tactile sensation. The lavender and chamomile infused flowers evoke stillness and serenity and create bubbles in the glass due to the gases released in the infusion stage.

Title:Inner Boundaries

Description: This series of work is a material investigation project, combining incompatible materials: Clear Bullseye glass, alkali metal, solid low melting point metal and metal oxide. Due to a different contraction rate, reactive and solid metals are not traditionally used in glass production. This series of work showcases how boundaries between materials can be crossed.
Stimutaniously, I used material metaphorically : the flawlwss transparency of glass to represent the environment and the metal to represent man made pollutants that's break the balance of the ecosystem. If combined in certain ways, they are destructive to each other. Yet, under controlled circumstances, environment and human development can coexist and even stimulate something new. I want to use my work to convey a positive vision for the current pandemic and environmental pollution crisis. Our life will return to a new normal, and we can find a way to coexist with nature before the apocalypse arrives.

Title:What a bird watcher sees

Description: Symbolic blown glass, which uses shape, size, colour, and pattern to capture what a birdwatcher uses to identify a bird. The glass is perched upon wood to build upon this imagery of birds in someone’s garden. This collection was created to capture the moments people turned to their gardens and open areas to see nature whilst in the national lockdown.

Title:The Influence of Colour.

Description: During my daily lockdown walks, I started to notice the beautiful stained-glass doors around my neighbourhood which I had never noticed before. The slow pace of life in lockdown forced me, like many, to take enjoyment in things usually categorised as ‘mundane’. I became fascinated by the beautiful craftsmanship of stained glass and by the joy this artistry brought me; how my walks through my neighbourhood gallery of doors were able to lift my mood in this slow-paced life.

Title:Bound

Description: By looking to my past and my rural upbringing, I explore the complex ties that bind us to past generations, traditions and the physical landscape. In my work I try to understand the love-hate relationship we have with the land as both a lover and a slave to it. My interaction with materials and objects of the rural landscape become creative catalysts stirring memories as they move through my hands. By using glass I aim to highlight the fragile connections that exist to our past and cultural heritage. On the other hand, it’s the durability of glass that also illustrates how strongly these connections are felt by those raised on the land. Universal themes of identity, belonging, and place can be found within my work - my sites of memory.

Title:Virtual Landscape

Description: This is a lenticular artwork that depicts a virtual rendering of a place that no longer exists. Here the fabrication of a perceptible memory of this place enables its preservation, stopping time and space within it’s boundaries. As the viewer moves around the piece they perceive this place as a three-dimensional space within the glass casting, that animates and transitions in synch with the observer. A time in space is held, captured, within the glass.

Title:Progression

Description: ‘‘All things in the world are born from 'being', 'being' is born from 'nothing''', Lao Zi said. Yixue Yang intends to transfer negative space to positive space by ink and glass, showing the progression from ‘yin’ to ‘yang’. Yixue repeats the works, making them in a line to create the suggestion that there is no beginning and no end. Like Piero Manzoni's idea, ''the Linea does not measure metres or kilometres, but is zero, not zero as the end, but as the beginning of an infinite series.''

Title:Natural Fluidity

Description: This project stemmed from my dissertation where I researched how nature and mindfulness combined could positively benefit one’s creativity. Through my piece, the aim is for the user/interactor to pause and perhaps experience a moment or more of mindful thought and perhaps release some of their innate creativity.
It seemed a natural progression for me to want to represent the ‘mindful breath’ which is an established part of meditative practice.This symbolized for me how this work should be made.

Description: Yixue Yang’s inspiration comes from the objects abandoned by people. When they are 'useless', thrown away, trodden, Yixue thinks they are genuine and sincere as they are transformed. Anish Kapoor believes, ‘the physical object has a counterpart, a non-physical one, and its physical self does not limit it. Meanwhile, people could regard their bodies as an object. We occupy our physical bodies, but we are not just what we look like.’ The non-physical one is the essence of ‘being’, which is a void.

This series features life-sized female body forms casted from the artist herself and mould blown using glass. These three pieces (left to right) ‘Outgrown Home’, ‘Broken Body of a Bloated Beast’ and ‘Unstained Youth’ express the progression of the self from childhood through to puberty. The series was inspired by how it feels to suddenly be faced with dealing with your monthly menstrual cycle and how it can impact the self and body.
This sculptural interpretation of the struggles which come with menstruation aims to initiate and encourage everyone of all genders and ages to share their own experiences and learn from others.

Title:Support System

Description: Support System is a pair of companion pieces that form part of my Fragments series. Originally part of a larger piece that failed, the broken pieces are a physical record of the risks I take in the hot shop. The broken pieces were angled and sharp, revealing the depth of the kiln-formed pattern within, so I decided to utilise these breaks and finish the objects as though the breaks were always intended to be there.
They are jewel-like, imperfect in their irregularity but polished to a full shine. I feel like they’re saying, ‘We tried, we failed; but we showed up anyway.’ The parallel of that feeling to how I feel about my experience of motherhood (which is a big driver behind my practice) was obvious and easy to align. I feel these polished fragments quite literally stand up proudly holding space for the reality of processing difficult experiences, feeling like a failure, and then still showing up.

Title:Gunnera Manicata 2021

Description: I think about the shelf life of the objects I produce and with that in mind, I minimise waste and/or use waste materials. Gunnera Manicata is made of 6.5Kgs of Gordon’s Gin bottles. This concern is rather more ethical than it is conceptual. I want to bring the outside in rather than impose on nature. To a certain extent, I am remediating nature in the hope that my output will draw attention to our natural surroundings. I went about casting various textures of a dead Gunnera leaf.

Title:Allison

Description: Traditional leaded stained glass panel created using acid etched flashed glass, vitreous paints and enamels, hire fire stain, glue chipped texturing and 24crt & 22crt gold leaf water gilding. The panel is installed into a black framed dimmable LED light box.
This panel was commissioned in memory of Allison, who lost her fight with cancer. Having spent time speaking with the client, and listening to the many wonderful stories of Allison, I worked on designs that captured those aspects of her life that were important to her and which resonate her personality:
Yellow roses – These were Allison’s favourite flower and featured in her wedding bouquet
Family names and relevant dates have been entwined into the flourishing rose bush background
VW logo – her love of the classic camper van
Candles – a gift guaranteed to bring a smile to her face
Nice cakes – all friends and family associated a good day out with Allison would involve quality cakes.
Bumble bee – the logo for the Beatson Cancer Centre, Glasgow where Allison received her treatment and for whom she and her friends and family assisted with fund raising
Neck scarves – Allison had a scarf for every occasion, another gift idea
The overall design reflects the client’s interest in the art deco era, and with Alphonse Mucha after their visit to Prague. This design created a foil for so many disparate elements to be combined into a pleasing and respectful aesthetic, which reflects her life and personality.

Title:Inner Boundaries

Description: This series of work is a material investigation project, combining incompatible materials: Clear Bullseye glass, alkali metal, solid low melting point metal and metal oxide. Due to a different contraction rate, reactive and solid metals are not traditionally used in glass production. This series of work showcases how boundaries between materials can be crossed.
Stimutaniously, I used material metaphorically : the flawlwss transparency of glass to represent the environment and the metal to represent man made pollutants that's break the balance of the ecosystem. If combined in certain ways, they are destructive to each other. Yet, under controlled circumstances, environment and human development can coexist and even stimulate something new. I want to use my work to convey a positive vision for the current pandemic and environmental pollution crisis. Our life will return to a new normal, and we can find a way to coexist with nature before the apocalypse arrives.

Title:What a bird watcher sees

Description: Symbolic blown glass, which uses shape, size, colour, and pattern to capture what a birdwatcher uses to identify a bird. The glass is perched upon wood to build upon this imagery of birds in someone’s garden. Title:The Influence of Colour.

Description: During my daily lockdown walks, I started to notice the beautiful stained-glass doors around my neighbourhood which I had never noticed before. The slow pace of life in lockdown forced me, like many, to take enjoyment in things usually categorised as ‘mundane’. I became fascinated by the beautiful craftsmanship of stained glass and by the joy this artistry brought me; how my walks through my neighbourhood gallery of doors were able to lift my mood in this slow-paced life.

Title:Bound

Description: By looking to my past and my rural upbringing, I explore the complex ties that bind us to past generations, traditions and the physical landscape. In my work I try to understand the love-hate relationship we have with the land as both a lover and a slave to it. My interaction with materials and objects of the rural landscape become creative catalysts stirring memories as they move through my hands. By using glass I aim to highlight the fragile connections that exist to our past and cultural heritage. On the other hand, it’s the durability of glass that also illustrates how strongly these connections are felt by those raised on the land. Universal themes of identity, belonging, and place can be found within my work - my sites of memory.

Title:Virtual Landscape

Description: This is a lenticular artwork that depicts a virtual rendering of a place that no longer exists. Here the fabrication of a perceptible memory of this place enables its preservation, stopping time and space within it’s boundaries. As the viewer moves around the piece they perceive this place as a three-dimensional space within the glass casting, that animates and transitions in synch with the observer. A time in space is held, captured, within the glass.

Description: ‘‘All things in the world are born from 'being', 'being' is born from 'nothing''', Lao Zi said. Yixue Yang intends to transfer negative space to positive space by ink and glass, showing the progression from ‘yin’ to ‘yang’. Yixue repeats the works, making them in a line to create the suggestion that there is no beginning and no end. Like Piero Manzoni's idea, ''the Linea does not measure metres or kilometres, but is zero, not zero as the end, but as the beginning of an infinite series.''
