Folding Falling Forming: Sculptural Glass Slumping 24-26 January 2025
Folding, Falling, Forming:
Sculptural glass slumping with multiple bends
24-26 January 2025 , 2024
10am - 4pm
Up to 4 students
Artist's studio, Surrey
An extension to the Sculptural Slumping Masterclass, this 3-day course focuses on creating complex glass forms through a sequence of kiln firings or unusual set ups that bend the glass in stages or one-off scenarios. Students will complete two projects over three days using sheet glass and a range of studio props (ceramic and refractory) to make dynamic, flowing sculptures through harnessing the forces of gravity and heat. Primarily using Lisa’s studio props, you’ll explore inventive ways to employ ad hoc props to hold or guide glass including wire, kiln furniture and fibre blanket. Previous slumping course students will deepen their knowledge (there is a quick recap of the previous course key ideas) but this course will also suit those new to the technique.
A visual presentation detailing the making process of several of Lisa’s glass sculptures and will give a fresh perspective on a range of manipulation techniques. Temperature, programs and annealing strategies will be discussed and students will become more confident devising firing programs that leave room for spontaneous results.
Students bring a sculptural concept (sketches or models) to discuss for future work. Together they will trouble shoot ideas, imagining kiln set-up scenarios to achieve new forms. A handout will summarise the core concepts and firing programs covered in the demos and presentation. All kiln-based materials are provided but students will bring their own glass. Bullseye glass will be used for this course but the methodologies you’ll learn apply to any type of glass.
Cost: £375 per person, includes mould-making materials and firings but students will bring their own glass. A maximum of 4 students, we’ll eat on site or go to a local cafe. Local accommodation information is available on request. Full payment confirms a place.
Location: Gomshall, Surrey GU5 9LL. There is plenty of parking the the garden studio. Lisa will send directions and can also collect students from Clandon station (direct from Waterloo) or Gomshall station (via Guildford) if necessary.
