Alana Lake

Born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, in 1981, Alana Lake is an artist and researcher whose work bridges art, psychoanalysis, and queer identity. She earned her BA in Photography from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2004 and completed postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Arts Schools, London, in 2009. Currently pursuing a PhD at Manchester School of Art, her research project, Towards a Pathology of Desire, adopts an autoethnographic, practice-led approach. Focusing on materials like glass, ceramic, and metalwork, as well as expanded drawing, the project examines whether addiction can be understood as a disease or, alternatively, as a "biology of desire."

Lake has received numerous awards and funding, including the Andrew Stewart Artist Award (2023), a Research Scholarship from Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (2022), Studio Funding from BBK (2021), the NEUSTART Stipendium from Deutscher Künstlerbund (2021), and the Project Space Award from Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (2018). Earlier in her career, she was awarded the Dunoyer de Segonzac Award (2009) and the Michael Moser Award (2008) from the Royal Academy of Arts. Her work reflects a sustained inquiry into the intersections of materiality, psychoanalytic theory, and identity.
