Fen Ditton Gallery Exhibitions
We are lucky at Fen Ditton that, even in the darker months, the gallery seems to draw in and capture light…constantly re-making and transforming the space and exhibits. This is particularly effective when those exhibits include masterworks of the art of glass as the shadows and colours shimmer and shift in the winter light.
In Green Shoots, for example, we have watched, often mesmerised, with visitors as the two new landscape-inspired bowls by Yorkshire artists Stephen Gillies and Kate Jones are re-shaped by the changing light. These two remarkable artists are celebrating thirty years of a working partnership this year. They have brought a new dimension to traditions of representing landscape in art, finding in the field patterns and plants around their North Yorkshire studio a dynamic subject for the medium. Light plays a crucial part in our perception of land forms (low winter light is often the most effective for revealing historic patterns of land use) and light is of course the fourth dimension of glass making.

We were delighted to be first introduced in 2024 to our other master hot glass artist on show in Green Shoots – Devon based Bob Crooks – as part of our celebration of the life of artist and glass designer Kathryn Holford. We were particularly thrilled therefore that Bob agreed to complete one of his stunning individual works for us for the show. Light again reveals the intricate patterns, inspired by textiles and architecture, of his ‘Warp Weft’ vase. Green shadows seem to dance across the wall and floors animating the space everyday, whatever the weather! And finally, in tune with our interest in imaginative and environmentally attentive approaches to art, we have Tord Boontje and Emma Woffenden’s stylish re-purposing of simple glass bottles into new domestic glassware. The green vase with winter twigs also captures some simple light effects… Come and see for yourself! |
