Craig Merriman

I work with kiln-formed glass, relief, light, and optical behavior, combining traditional glass processes with digital tools developed in the studio. My practice includes photographic relief, 3D scanning, mold-making, 3D printing, machine-drawn powdered glass, and measured glass data used to understand how colour and transparency change with thickness. Rather than treating technology as separate from craft, I use it to ask practical material questions: how does glass carry an image, how does thickness affect colour, and how can digital information become physically resolved in fired glass? Much of my work explores the point where data, handwork, firing, and perception meet.

Recent projects include a web-based Glass Library built from measured optical data, studio calculators for kiln-forming, and continued development of relief-based image processes in glass. The Glass Library explores how commercially available kiln glass changes with thickness, including transmitted colour, reflected appearance, chemistry indicators, striker behaviour, and black point.

These tools grew from the same practical question that drives my artwork: if an image or design is going to be carried by glass thickness, the material response needs to be understood before firing. Alongside this research, I continue to make kiln-formed relief works, machine-drawn powdered glass pieces, cast paper impressions, and experimental molds that connect digital fabrication with hand-controlled glass processes.
