Josien Geerdink
Josien Geerdink works with “kiln-formed glass” to represent her ideas and experiences in objects and installations. A favorite technique of hers is pâte-de-verre. This is a very old technique in which glass in powder and granular form is built up layer by layer in a mold, then the glass with the mold goes into a glass oven to become a whole. The idiosyncratic way in which she applies this technique often evokes different associations in the viewer; the viewer sometimes thinks that the objects are made of sugar. Then, when the light hits the glass, the sparkle is reminiscent of ice crystals and the structure becomes “alive.” Geerdink uses the material as a sculptor sculpts or a painter uses the palette. She works as a visual artist with glass in the leading role.
