THE CGS FEBRUARY OPEN 2019
The CGS February Open 2019
This wonderfully varied online Contemporary Glass Exhibition culminated after a call for artists to take part in an open show.
There was no specific theme for this exhibition………however, we asked that the images selected, exhibited a high quality of work, and a successful level of photography, following the CGS photography guidelines.
45 CGS glass artists were eventually selected, from a large number of entries.
It was launched on 8th March 2019.
Any questions relating to the website or the gallery please email info@cgs.org.uk
Any questions relating to your membership account, logging in and your details email admin@cgs.og.uk

Details: Large wave form, with 'tapestry' formed wave design.
A multi faceted piece where most of the 'texture' is in fact an optical illusion.
The wave pattern requires several hot & cold processes and finally slumping over a large wave form ceramic mould.
I find people cannot resist touching it, which I actively encourage, allowing their hand to follow the shape and being amazed that the surface is not actually 3-Dimensional.

Details: Blown Glass and Steel Wire Grid. H: 31 cm x W: 17cm
Birmingham’s architectural, industrial and manufacturing heritage have informed my work conceptually and aesthetically, through my materials and using a restricted colour palette of greys to bring this to the foreground. Characterised by a minimal aesthetic and inspired by brutalist architecture, represented by the steel grid structures I create, that dictates the forms and surface pattern of the glass. Steel is habitually seen as strong while glass is known for its fragility. However, in my work these roles are reversed as I explore the innumerable possibilities of the materials, the annealed steel is soft and delicate yet still the supporting structure in the sculptures. To create these sculptures, I use an experimental approach to traditional cage glass blowing.

My work explores human emotion through abstract form. In Zen, enso is a circle that is hand drawn in one or two uninhibited brush strokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. Through my artwork I aim to capture the simplicity and beauty of the natural landscape in deep dimension.
This piece has 12 layers of glass. Each layer is hand-painted and pre-fired, sometimes 2-3 times, to add more detail to the layers.
The layers are then stacked together and kiln-cast into one solid piece of glass artwork.

Oloid I
Photographer: Frieda Mellema | Uniquole
Details: 31x20x20 cm
For this object I was inspired by the industrial form called oloid. This form is used as a closed container to mix heavy metals with its binders more efficiently or to purify water up to 15% faster. Centrifugal - and centripetal forces are naturally balanced when this container-oloide-form is being moved and turned in its natural tottering motion.
I only used cold working techniques. It consists of 5 layers of 3 mm float glass, laminated, grinded, sandblasted and a light touch of white oil paint for a balanced serenity.

This artwork was inspired by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei’s scientific investigations of the pendulum, an object with unique properties to restore force due to gravity. Details: Five pâte de verre vessels. The larger one has a diameter of 12 cm.
These "Floating Vessels" are the result of experimenting with the pâte de verre technique using the paste of glass without a mold. The result are ethereal pieces, very thin and translucent, but that can contain water and also float. Like all my works, I take nature as a source of inspiration.
I love to give them the detail of gold on the edges.

May Your Wish Come True
Photographer: Courtesy of artist
Details: 2018, Screen-printed and kiln-formed glass powder
This installation artwork consists of hundreds of delicately powder printed glass leaves hanging from the ceiling. Each leaf has a different person’s wish written on it, which is collected from anonymous people through the wish box I set up in a public space. The idea comes from the myths and the traditional custom from my origin country Japan. The leaf was often used as a device to deliver a person’s wish or prayer and connects the physical and spiritual world. The leaf itself is a physical manifestation of a person’s wish, whilst the reflected shadow of the wish on the wall is the alter bridge to where the fulfillment of the wish maybe answered from.

Photographer: Louise Ward
Details: Pate de Verre, roughly 30cm x 20cm x 10cm
This is one piece taken from a series of Pate de verre glass faces created to mark the centenary of WW1. My Great grandfather was a Corporal during the war and left a short diary which he named 'A few experiences in France'. My work depicts faces covered in war injuries and extracts from his diary with the objective and getting the viewer to consider the sacrifices of the men who fought for their country on a more personal level. This photo was taken in a preserved trench which was used during WW1 in the Battle of The Somme in France.

Floating Lines
Photographer: Jonas Noël Niedermann
Details: 35x25x8 cm
A work INSPIRED by photography of fumes. On top of that this work represents my fascination for glass: its transparency, multiple layers - and therefore - its illusionary. White and black lines are flowing in the transparent glass imitating smoke lines in the air. This self invented technique working with folding coloured lines in transparent hot and glowing glass, allows to work on multiple layers. Not knowing where the start and the end of the string is - similar to such on a DNA string – the pieces have unique details. The surface of intertwined strings are in a high contrast to the monochrome inside, and because of its complicated technique they will never meet. Transparent glass is always in between in order to let the strings float up and down in the material. A new and unique approach letting the lines flow not only in one of the consecutive layers but exploring different depths of the glass.
This technique is a result of working experiences as a glassblower made during my 36 months of glass journey in Murano | Italy, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Sweden, and the USA.

The Usual Suspects
Photographer: Bob Leatherbarrow
Details: Six Kilnformed goblets, each of which is about 20 cm tall.
"The Usual Suspects" were created to honour the functional history of glass in the most beautiful way I can.
This collection of goblets, each of which rests on a matching foot, showcase various textural styles created with kilnformed glass powders. These textures have been attenuated during slumping in a drop-out mould. Textured powders also occur at various levels throughout each piece resulting in features such as the small cups at the base of several goblets. The dark boundaries between colours result from careful placement of chemically reactive colours.

Working with glass as my medium is always interesting. Using the lost wax technique I am able to create my own unique forms using wax giving me the capability to sculpt with the detail I require. Casting them in glass makes the forms permanent with the addition of vast range of colours, characteristics and textures that glass provides. I like to add found objects or other props to my work. Transforming them into a piece of art, changing their purpose and giving them a new lease of life. In doing so, I want my pieces of sculpture to tell their own stories. My objective is to inspire thought in the meaning and to make people smile!

Cloaked - Jocasta & Oedipus
Photographer: Ester Segarra
Details: Free blown glass with kiln formed glass cloak applied hot
Cloaked are large figurative pieces that are the culmination of the development of ideas and processes made over a long period of time. The process of slow, considered exploration of the material cold and rigid in the studio. The technical exploration of hot glass processes requiring quick judgements in order to create a form, drawn from observation. And the process of resolution, so by bringing these elements together, produces something that is greater than the sum of the parts.
These pieces stand tall like a character in a play, conveying the essence of inevitable tragedy to be found in life, love, war and death.

Studio Door Panel
Photographer: Katie Fawcett
Details: Opaque door panel (570x355mm) with glass screenprinted in blue and white enamels.
Door panel made to replace plain reeded glass in my studio door. The glass was sandblasted and screen printed before being leaded into the replacement panel. The image shows the panel backlit by daylight. The designs are initially drawn up by hand and then drawn up digitally so that they can be scaled as required.

PENDULUM (displayed against a mirror)
Photographer: Gary Willis
Details: Eco-optical glass sculpture. Cast, polished and sandblasted. Size: 22.5 H x 22 W x 11.5 cm (8.8 H x 8.6 W x 4.5 in)
This artwork was inspired by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei’s scientific investigations of the pendulum, an object with unique properties to restore force due to gravity. The pendulum's swing marks a fundamental system in nature that ties the rhythm of time to the existence of matter in the universe.

Floating vessels
Photographer: Luciano Garetto

'A few experiences in France'
