Apply for Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award 2025

Glass artists aged up to 40 (in 2025) are invited to make a note to apply for the upcoming Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award 2025.

This open, international call for artists who make significant use of glass in their work takes place every two years. Online applications are free of charge and will be accepted from 29 July to 6 October 2024.

Artists may submit images of up to three recent works (made in 2023 or 2024) for the competition.

The first prize is 10,000 Euros and there are also two talent awards, each worth 1,500 Euros.

The Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award was founded by Ruth-Maria Franz (1910-2008) to keep alive the memory of her daughter and artist Jutta Cuny (1940-1983).

Jutta Cuny was one of the most distinguished protagonists of European glass sculpture from the mid-1970s to her early tragic, accidental death. Shaped by sandblasting from solid glass blocks, her sculptures opened new paths into glass art. Her cubic, polished blocks gained shape through their complex, matted interiors. Jutta Cuny preferred to work with transparent glass alongside materials such as bronze or porcelain.

Through a number of generous gifts and the bequest of Ruth-Maria Franz, the Glasmuseum Hentrich in Germany now owns the artistic legacy of Jutta Cuny, including five major, and a number of smaller, works of art. It is the largest collection of her work in a public institution.

Ruth-Maria Franz established the Jutta Cuny-Franz Foundation in Vienna in 1984. At her request, management of the foundation was transferred to Glasmuseum Hentrich in Dusseldorf in 1994.
