Work is for sale! Please contact members directly to purchase work.

The pandemic was a frightening and challenging period for us all. For many it meant illness and the loss of loved ones, for others loneliness and isolation. However, there were those for whom lockdown gave the opportunity to stop and review both their lives and their creative practice. Out of misery there came a flowering of ideas and new work.

We asked members if they were one of those able to create something new and interesting during lockdown. As we launch into a new year, our first online selling exhibition of 2023 offers an insight into this flowering where darkness turned to light.

It is fascinating to not only see what they made but also to hear about their experience behind it.

(An exhibition for CGS members only.)

Description: Shoes are powerful wearables that allow one to step forward. They not only protect and comfort us but may indicate a person’s identity, status & gender. Shoes are vehicles that allow us to move and experience our environments. We wear shoes not only for their function but for the emotional charge that enables us to transition, connect and transform. Without them, there is no poetry of passage.

Title:Tracks in the Sand Duet

Description: The pandemic enabled me to take time out to explore. I loved walking along the beach and observing the way that the Fishermans’ tractors made amazing track designs in the sand which were then washed away by the incoming tide. I formalised these track designs into patterns which I translated into fused glass panels.
At the time the tracks were a reminder of the temporary nature of life.

Description: A unique, extremely heavy lead crystal cullet. Hand engraved at home during lockdown. I made a note of words and phrases that were new to us. This is a vintage annealed full lead crystal cullet from Whitefriars factory. I have deliberately left the strokes of the diamond bur, raw, along with the sharp edges of the cullet. The letter serifs represent the “Spike Protein”.

Title:Hope

Description: During the pandemic I tried to make myself draw every day. As a result I had a sketchbook full of ideas. I focused on the world around me, particularly in the garden. Watching simple changes in nature was calming in a turbulent world that turned normality upside down. I developed my ideas into a series of rainbow images based on my sketches. Back lights seemed a way of creating a window of hope.

Title:Sails

Description: During the Covid lockdown I was quite busy, but I also had a lot more time to be creative, so I took the plunge of designing and making this large stained glass sculpture. Because of lockdown I kept the engineering simple and the structural materials to those I could source online.
It is a window that has escaped and gone for a walk... a window you can walk through... it says, 'look up!'

Title:Graffiti guys

Description: These wall panels and dishes were inspired by graffiti that I saw on my friend Grace's Instagram pages during the first lockdown. The bright and cheering images were a great antidote to looking out of my window and going out once a day. I first made a small dish and then got more adventurous and made the large 80cm x 45cm wall panel.

The whole process cheered me up immensely!

Title:The lost years a glass mask

Description: COVID was an unprecedented period we all experienced globally. The mask became the worlds symbol for all these difficult years where humanity was tested to the limit. For some the mask became a sense of safety, others it was a restriction of liberty and for health professionals it was and continues to be a necessity. Made of glass using non traditional patedeverre technique, displayed on wood.

Title:Shoes...The Poetry of Passage

Being cooped up and feeling frustrated with our government and their lack of compassion for others and their idleness with controlling Covid, my spiky little dragons came to mind! Title:Sardine Fishing in Oman

Description: After hours of zoom life drawing during Covid, the challenge was how to combine this techique with glass?
So; the top layer is fused glass and behind it is an abstract painting on paper. Once framed it acts like scenography, with the figures casting shadows onto the swirling blues behind. The scene depicts Omani fishermen casting nets straight off the beach for sardines (from a holiday photo).
