“Cycles of Life” Launched on 6th May 2024

From the smallest microbe to the biggest animal on earth – the Antarctic blue whale – we all experience the cycle of life from birth Preview Changes (opens in a new tab)through to death. Shakespeare wrote about the 7 ages of man – the infant, the schoolboy, the lover, the soldier, the justice, the pantaloon and old age.

The rhythm of life has a powerful beat so we invited CGS members and glass artists to show us their journey through the natural world. Even their glass pieces go through a cycle of creation!

Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) Members took up the invitation – and here we show you what they produced!

Title:Beneath the Surface

Description: This large bead is made using the Mokume Gane technique. There are several layers of glass. The base is black, with a layer of Lumiere Luster and then many layers of enamels are added. I then carve my design into the bead to show the layers and the sparkling interior. The top layers are pink, blue and green. With the carving you see the sparkly silver leaf below.

Description: Lustleigh Woods which is a section of Temperate Rain Forest. I was totally mesmerised by the layers of foliage and trees, bogs and ferns and knew I needed to capture it in glass. This piece was conceived as a 'diorama'- with 4 layers pulling you deeper in the forest and enabling you to feel the lushness and depth of greenery and lush wonder that our temperate rainforest contain.

Title:Asphodel II

Description: This vessel was inspired by the plant bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) that have star-like flowers in a bright yellow with vibrant orange accents.

In Greek mythology, asphodel was a symbol of the underworld and mourning while in Scottish folklore, it was thought that livestock grazing on this plant developed brittle bones. But it was the calcium poor pasture that was the true culprit.

Description: Inspired by my workshop teaching in schools, the panel is a metaphor for the cycle of education and the waning of fashions; the full spring cherry blossom flower turning, petals blowing in the wind, the autumn leaves and the fresh buds. Description: Scientific glassworking is now an endangered craft in Britain and by incorporating these techniques into this body of work a parallel is drawn between the devastation of coral reefs (coral bleaching) and the loss of scientific glass blowing. Both are being eroded by time and the collection allows for a contemplation upon this, as well as a hope to raise awareness to these issues.

Title:Seahorses

Description: Each seahorse was made using a mixture of clear crushed glass and 15 different coloured glass frits and powders which were laid onto the kiln shelf. The perforated structure is designed to convey the skeletal form and often translucent nature of the seahorse. Numerous experiments were done to achieve the desired size and shape of the ‘holes’ before the final three were created and kiln fired.

Like the phoenix reborn from the flame, this glass bird was reborn in its new form and color from the kiln.

Title:Asphodel II

Description: This vessel was inspired by the plant bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) that have star-like flowers in a bright yellow with vibrant orange accents.

In Greek mythology, asphodel was a symbol of the underworld and mourning while in Scottish folklore, it was thought that livestock grazing on this plant developed brittle bones. But it was the calcium poor pasture that was the true culprit.

Title:Seahorses

Description: Each seahorse was made using a mixture of clear crushed glass and 15 different coloured glass frits and powders which were laid onto the kiln shelf. The perforated structure is designed to convey the skeletal form and often translucent nature of the seahorse. Numerous experiments were done to achieve the desired size and shape of the ‘holes’ before the final three were created and kiln fired.
