“Words, words, words! All our lives we use words to express ourselves, to tell stories, to make deals, in love and in anger. We lie, we joke, we make promises and even thump our political soapbox. How do you use words in your work? Do you start with words in a title and take inspiration from them or actually write within your glass? ”

We asked CGS member artists to tell us how they use words within their work.

Title:Remember Venus

Description: The atmosphere of Venus is made of 96% carbon dioxide. Reading about the planet of Venus and it´s runaway greenhouse effect the words caught me. Thinking of our own planet and the increasing amount of carbon dioxide made me make this picture. The WORDS started the process but I also use often use WORDS in my glass-pictures, sometimes parts of quotes or sometimes my own words

Title:Wedged Within

Description: This piece is a reference to how my neurodivergent brain feels when planning to talk. All the words start off well ordered and linear, then turn to spaghetti soup in my head. By the time they’re ready to come out, they trip over each other in the wrong order and some even get forgotten and left behind.

Title:Fuzzy

Description: This bear is made from one piece of chunky 10mm thick clear float glass that has been cut to shape using a water jet cutting machine. It has then been screen-printed by hand in this fuzzy word design using glass enamel, which is fired into place.

Title:I have a secret

Description: When you have a secret how do you feel? "I Have a Secret" is an immersive installation that invites viewers to confront the hidden secrets within themselves. The neon lights on the mirrored surface reflect the internal and external complexity of our secrets. Both neons vying for your attention. The lock boxes serve as vessels for participants to anonymously share their deepest truths.

Title:Maa on niin kaunis

Description: These words translate as "the country is so beautiful" and are the beginning of a much loved Finnish Christmas/winter hymn. It has ancient roots, but was translated to Finnish during the late 1800's, when a desire for independence was growing strongly, and being expressed in all forms of art. Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire at the time. Independence came in 1917.

Title:Wishing Vessel II

Description: This piece acts as a holding places for dreams and wishes. The text is free writing about transformation and manifestation. A piece of pate de verre 'paper' was prefired then rolled up hot onto a blown vessel form. This piece was exhibited at the British Glass Biennale Glass Beginnings exhibition where the audience was invited to write their hearts desires on paper and place inside the vessel.

Description: 'The Alphabet' in contemporary stained glass.
Inspired by my love of lettering, typography and decorative fairground art. Each letter is made with mouthblown Lamberts sheet glass, and has been hand painted, many letters were acid etched, silver stained, enamels applied and kiln fired.
The letters are leaded together and framed in wood and hanging attachment system on the back of the frame.

Title:Wall of Memories

Description: This piece is based on my mother’s WWII diaries which I found after her death, describing her time at a work camp in Austria in 1944. The 3 layered figures are screen printed directly from a page from her diaries in her handwriting (in Polish). The wall is of tiny glass ‘bricks’, a poignant reminder even now of the ruined of cities under siege in both Ukraine and the Middle East.

Title:MOUCHARABIEH

Description: Moucharabieh are decorative window blinds in muslim countries, to allow seeing without being seen. I have used the islamic prayer formula written in Arabic calligraphy as a decorative element. Behind the main text, you can make other texts that relate more mundane events.

Title:New places of understanding

Description: The starting point of my work is always words: fragments of text recreated in glass. The words are written in a fusion of English and Urdu which reflects my mixed English and Pakistani heritage, and the letters are further abstracted by playing with scale, rotation and order. The resultant forms create pieces which are not intended to be read but which speaker to the viewer on a conceptual level.

It has ancient roots, but was translated to Finnish during the late 1800's, when a desire for independence was growing strongly, and being expressed in all forms of art. Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire at the time. Independence came in 1917.
