“It’s In The Word” Launched on 4th Nov 2024

“Words, words, words! All our lives we use words to express ourselves, to tell stories, to make deals, in love and in anger. We lie, we joke, we make promises and even thump our political soapbox. How do you use words in your work? Do you start with words in a title and take inspiration from them or actually write within your glass? ”

We asked CGS member artists to tell us how they use words within their work.

50 glass artists share their ideas with us.

Meet The Makers Zoom Evening- 27th at 7.30pm, contact admin@cgs.org.uk for more information

Live – 4th Nov 2024 – 6th Jan, 2025

Title:Who said fragile?

Description: With this piece I would like to reflect on the idea of femininity and glass.
The texts used in this piece belong to famous female poets such as Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. The idea of using recycled glass turning it into a different object embraces the idea of this new opportunity women have to be themselves, maybe more transparent, visible and honest with their own truth.

Title:Seeping Through

Description: Seeping Through is part of a body of work focused on Sole, an Italian brand of laundry soap, exploring rooted ideas of traditional gender roles through this symbol of domestic care. Usually translated as 'sunshine', the word Sole is also the feminine, plural of the adjective 'solo' or 'alone', embodying the issue of domestic female isolation with soap bars as bricks in a wall

Title:Rhythm of Blue

Description: I am fascinated by the layers and depth of color. “Rhythm of Blue” is a fused glass art work made from tinted float glass, featuring three rectangular panels arranged side by side. This composition creates a harmonious flow of gradients in blue, gray, and black tones. The hand-polished the surfaces have a satin finish that emphasizes balance, depth, and tonal shifts, evoking a sense of serenity.

Description: This is part of part of a series I started after being invited to join exhibition based on the poem “return of the native” by John Killick. The lines “white to the sands and grey to the shallows, cool blues into the translucency of the air” immediately brought to mind the wonderful colours of the Scottish west coast.

Title:New places of understanding

Description: The starting point of my work is always words: fragments of text recreated in glass. The words are written in a fusion of English and Urdu which reflects my mixed English and Pakistani heritage, and the letters are further abstracted by playing with scale, rotation and order. The resultant forms create pieces which are not intended to be read but which speaker to the viewer on a conceptual level.
