“Light and Dark”

Launch – 2nd December 2024

Deadline – 20th December 2024

Live – 6th January, 2025

Day and night, black and white, bold contrasts made by shadows in stark sunlight – all are examples of light and dark. Darkness, is the direct opposite of lightness, is defined as a lack of illumination, an absence of visible light, or a surface that absorbs light, such as black. It is estimated that 99% of our universe is hidden in the dark – and as light travels at a finite speed, the further you look into the universe the further one looks back in time. Show us your contrasts, your extremes, even your explorations into space – boldly go where no one has gone before!

Launched on:6th January 2024

Title:Shadow Gate

Description: While drawing the shadow of a tree I got in a flow, that other state of being. I thought about the allegory of the cave of Plato. Can I take a look into the perfect world of the soul by drawing shadows? In Gothic churches, divine light was let in through stained glass windows and they colored the imperfect world. I have colored the light in my drawing with glass, as in a Gothic church.

Title:Svalbard Icy Mountain Range

Description: Inspired by an iconic mountain trio at the end of a beautiful fjord just 500 miles from the North Pole. They towered over us in our safe haven after a 3-day, 1000+ mile stormy sailing-yacht expedition from Tromsø to Svalbard. I was struck by their uniqueness and beauty and the raw polar wilderness.

Title: ‘Ice-coal’

Description: Year: 2024
"Ice-coal" is a striking glass sculpture that explores the dramatic contrast between light and dark, white and black. Title:Runrig at night

Description: Runrig – A historic strip of crofting land with rotating ownership.
Runrig at night was created using powders to create a marbled effect. The glass was then cut into strips and full fused onto a clear base. The outcome was an image that hints at a dark, forgotten landscape, while the strips portray the marks of historic land use visible in the Highlands.
