THE CONTEMPORARY GLASS SOCIETY SUPPORTING GLASS IN LATIN AMERICA

The Contemporary Glass Society supporting glass in Latin America.

The Contemporary Glass Society (UK) is delighted to announce an online exhibition of 44 selected glass artists residing in Latin America.

There was no allotted theme for the show except that artists must be living, studying or residing in Latin America.

The show exhibits a particular strength of character, demonstrating a vibrance and diversity that we have maybe not seen before here in our Gallery area. Many of the pieces are strongly symbolic, with echoes of both a lifeforce and cultural identity. Stories are told. Pieces lie glancing at the viewer, challenging them to take part and discover more.

Artists did not need to be a member of the CGS to submit work for this show, but are welcome to join the Society in the future and take part in all our shows.

The CGS is a charity, registered in the UK. The organisation is funded entirely through members and from donations made by individuals and organisations. We represent glass at an international level and give glass a voice in the media along with forging links between all those involved with glass in an artistic, technological, manufacturing or support capacity.

A huge thank you to our friends and associated across the water and in particular to Dina Priess for her help in sharing our details with artists in Latin America.

This exhibition was launched Mar/Apr 2017

Launched on:1st March 2017

Title of Work: Octopus

Short Description of Work:

Temptation, the magic word of the 21th century. For that, we fall apart without realising. Theater, books and orchestras have sugested wills. Radio, TV and moovies have explicited temptations. Social media and internet, bring wills and temptations at the tip of our fingers.

For each touch of the index finger on a gorila glass, hundred of tentacles emerge to surface to hugh and choke us. Without realize, we go to sleep with the wishes in our pijama's pocket.

The tentacle of an octopus is a tribute for the seducction of a liquid world.

Title of Work: Horizonte abierto (Limitless horizon)
Short Description of Work: As a small girl, I used to love sitting on the sand to watch the ocean (the sea so deep, transparent, luminous, fragile and resistant as glass is). Even then, its constant rhythm soothed me, its furious explosions empowered me, its limitless horizon freed me and I saw myself in the comings and goings of the tide. Those days, in front of the sea, that little girl learnt the meaning of one of the most powerful words: freedom.

Title of Work: Under the Sea
Under the sea, full of shapes and colours, forms an extraordinary world of magic and fantasy. It creates an environment that lets our imagination fly, a safe place to be ourselves. Under the sea belongs to another dimension, where dreams can come true and new emotions can be discovered and felt.

This artwork was created using two techniques: flameworking and fusion glass, and three different types of glass: float glass, bullseye glass and recycled glass. A frame of wood surrounds these structures. Besides, the former is supported by an iron structure that allows placing the artwork in five different positions. The wide variety of positions, including totally horizontal and almost totally vertical, make possible the incorporation of this work in every home.

Title of the work: Migrant silent desesperation
Brief description of the work:

My work experiment with new and different forms of touching through a material so sensitive as the glass. I find in it delicacy and fragility. It is cold and faithful at the same time.

I consider glass as a means and a barrier. It let us see but not pass, as a barrier so real and so illusory.

The emblem of emotions.

I work chewing the migrations, the refugees, and the impossibility of getting places where to live.

I am deeply looking for the process of refine the genuine question whether human life is stronger than desire.

About the work
I´ve been always concerned to know about and try to understand another customs and cultures.
I spent some time in Mexico and I have observed their rituals on love, death, and transcendence. This culture celebrates the day of the dead and returns them in spirit recalling them with festivities.
In mexican popular homes there are altars with skulls that evoke their beloved dead. They celebrate them with candles, flowers, food, tobacco and alcohol. They believe that in this way they remain in presence and only truly die if you forget them. The day of the dead becomes a party with music, songs, dressed skeletons and altars with skulls and offerings.

This work is a tribute to Mexican culture.

Woman

“Woman” is the first work of a work in process about the subject.

Am I talking about myself? About me being a woman, about the ones who came before me, and the ones who will come after me: growing, changing, giving, birth, transmuting, rebirthing…

The same as my friends, my sisters, my mother, my grandmothers, and my great grandmothers; each one of them with their own shadow, their unique history, and with their intuitive wisdom going on and on through generations.

In this work I have used the Pate de Verre technique.

I used only one fine powder color and I modified the intensity, adding different concentrations of powder clear to give the character to my work.

Short Description of Work: This "Origami" work is part of a series of works in pate de verre, where the use of this technique adapts itself to the flexibility of paper, as well as our lives are adapted to the different experiences. The structure of the origami folds represent the daily routine; the imperfections of the work represent the unexpected events of our lives, and the cracks and absence of material are our scars.
