Sign of the Times will examine the presence of text, signage, and visual language in contemporary glass art. The exhibition aims to brings together works that reference modern society—its advertising, public spaces, digital culture, and shared symbols—while also acknowledging glass’s long history as a carrier of messages. Using a wide range of glass techniques and approaches, we hope to show works using text, signs and objects that invite reflection on communication, identity, and the social, cultural, and political markers of our time.

Title:Love Drug

Description: Your love is my drug transforms the everyday known shape of a pill into a glowing symbol of emotional dependancy and desire. The glowing red neon blurs the line between romance and addiction, with the scattering of hearts and pills reinforcing this tension. The work shows how love can function as a remedy and obsession.

Title:LIAR

Description: LIAR was begun eight days after the 2017 inauguration. Kiln-formed in black glass with raised red text, portrait imagery, and a gilded reverse, the piece turns accusation into object. It was not hindsight or prophecy, but a statement of fact based on what was already visible. The word is fused into glass, making it physically fixed.

Title:To be Human is to Migrate

Description: An unknown person is behind a barbed wire fence. He shares his DNA with us all but longs to be free. Humans have always travelled the world seeking sanctuary and a new life. Some of my own ancestors were Huguenots who fled to Somerset and others were Protestants who sought sanctuary in Antwerp during the reign of Queen Mary I. We are all the descendants of migrants.

Description: This stained-glass sculpture is a silent, yet eloquent protest of the current US administration. Set against a completely broken background, stripes disintegrate into tatters as once bright stars darken and fall from their crumbling blue field. The title refers to Abraham Lincoln's famous quote that "a house divided against itself, cannot stand."

Description: For Solo Cup and Heart Emoji, I have used the pâte de verre process with sculpting glass because of its ability to take on a life of its own. The heart emoji, symbolising love while questioning whether care and connection are becoming harder to find. The melting plastic cup represents our throwaway culture, transforming a disposable object into a lasting reminder of environmental neglect.

Description: This piece is a reflection on the female form and embodiment (the visual expectations that) we are subjected to visually every day.
These expectations are thrust upon us online and in the media and are unrealistic and unobtainable to many, so this piece questions the internal and external pressure felt in relation to our bodies and where these insecurities and the need to conform come from.

Title:Hybridity. Do not ask

Description: 'Hybridity. Do not ask' is a wall-mounted glass poem in Urdu English, currently exhibited in Sunderland Museum. It explores themes of identity by focussing on the sense of being made to feel 'other' by the majority, speaking not just to race but to many other minority groups within society. It challenges the viewer to reflect on their experiences of being othered or of othering someone else.

Title:I.C.E Vase

Description: Created for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. Inspired by Jasper John's 'Flag' this vase is a metaphor for the current state of the US. Each stripe has been replaced with an 'Abecedarium (A-Z) of words that have been used negatively to describe the current leadership (or lack of). Even with the gilded interior I doubt this will be given pride of place in the Oval Office!
