Exhibition 4 – Bizarre and Surreal

Call Opens – 4th August
Deadline – 22nd August
Live – 6th October
Meet the Makers Talk – TBC

.
“That’s bizarre!” “How surreal!” -when we make these statements do we really know what they mean?
To be bizarre can also be described as odd, strange, unusual, grotesque, or weird.
In contrast surreal, in relation to an artwork could mean that the elements in it are combined in a
way that you would not normally expect like having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream.
This immediately conjures up images by Salvador Dali and the Surrealists.
How are you bizarre and surreal?
We’re inviting you to show us your work!

Title:the Void

Description: Hair is the continuation of genes and life; the DNA in our hair comes from our ancestors. Yixue Yang regards the unseen, continued genes in her hair as emptiness. The void here is in time and space. Yixue scanned her hair and printed it on the glass to create a vision of hair floating freely in the air, a pure state of ‘being’. Chinese generally believed that the human soul is hidden in the hair.

Title:Pensamientos que vuelan

Description: This glass sculpture captures the moment when a thought takes flight. The serene figure, anchored on a golden base, evokes introspection. From its head emerge translucent wings in green and gold—symbols of mental expansion and intuitive exploration. Delicate filaments suggest sensory connections to the unseen, inviting viewers to imagine thinking as a form of soaring.

Title:Motley

Description: On with the Motley ? Just another Jester to invite to sleep in my studio ? - I think this one is a bit surreal because of the shape form and colour. It changes character depending on the light source and it can appear to be anything from a peaceful persona , to a humorous prankster, or an evolving evil spirit .
Motley emerged from the sand and surprised me in a totally unexpected way.
