Zuzana Kubelková

She was educated in glassmaking in North Bohemia. After her studies at the High School of Applied Arts for Glassmaking in Železný Brod, where she graduated from in glass pressing, she continued with her studies at the glass studio at J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and she spent one year at the glass studio at Moholy Nagy Muvészeti Egyetem in Budapest in Hungary led by Gyorgy Gaspár. She creates glass objects, installations, paintings and drawings. She is interested in combining glass with other materials and techniques, in process of discovering the characteristics, searching for new ways how to use them and making an experiments. Zuzana is opened to all techniques especially casting and blowing, she experiments with colours, structures and chemicals. She also completed several internships abroad. Since 2007, she has been involved in various exhibition projects and she has been successful at international Czech competitions, including the Ludwig Moser Prize (honourable mention), the Stanislav Libenský Award (second and third prize), and most recently receiving first prize at Young Glass 2017 in the Danish town of Ebeltoft, Achilles Stiftung prize at Cobrug Glass Prize 2022 and in the same year the third prize in Milano Vetro under 35 in Italy. Her objects are represented in the public collections at Veste Coburg in Germany, in Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark and in many private collections all over the world.

I create dynamic glass, experiments, fuse it with other substances, analyses and examines it – rationally, but with empathy. I work with it as if I were conducting an interview, but without the niceties and courteous phrases. That is how the interactive artworks come into being, works which stimulate the emotions and incite interest without pandering to the audience. I perceive glass as a material that serves artists. Nothing more, nothing less. It is the medium through which I tell my stories.

Each year I try to make some different objects than I have made before. I make an experiments to combine glass with chemistry – sodium acetate or blue vitriol, with materials as fiber glass, basalt or basalt fibers, grinding wheels, or I educe my own materials as kind of home made flubbers from glue and borax. Nothing is strange to me I search for different way in this supersaturated world. New materials give me new impulses, ideas, inspirations. In my creations you can find both design pieces and conceptual artworks – original, identifiable, my own.
I resist stagnation, looking for new territories, new approaches and connections in glassmaking.
