Title:Childhood Memories

Description: My engraving is a celebration of the good times about being a child. I chose the wording because the meaning can be interpreted in more than one way. It was an unusual and challenging piece of glass to work with because the prominent centre dome needed to be integral to the design. The research into the design was a lot of fun too. I’d forgotten just how many different ways children enjoy playing.

Title:Bezhin Meadow

Description: The engraving is based on the short story from The Hunting Sketches by the
Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, published in 1852. The hunter comes across a group
of boys from the village who have come to spend the night in the meadow guarding
the horses. He listens to them as they scare each other by telling ghost stories. It
is not an exact illustration of the story, which takes place entirely at night. The
engraving shows six boys, each one modelled on one of the engraver’s grandsons.
In the original story there are only five boys.

Title:In the Invisible Places

Description: Inspired by three lines from Alice Oswald’s poem ‘Ideogram for Green’.

‘In the invisible places Where the first leaves start Green breathes growth’

Reassuring words expressing hope, the magic of nature and the promise of new beginnings.

Most of the engraving is on the underside with the central sprig of blossom, and the curl of a root on the top surface.

The two colours of this asymmetric piece seemed to be a perfect fit for the inscription. The earthy brown mystery of the rim and the lush green of the centre.

Title:Fetch

Description: My piece ‘Fetch’ is inspired by walks in my local park. Whilst on these walks I play fetch with my dog and collect foliage I find on the ground, which I then take home to draw from in order to create an illustrated log; like a foliage map of the park. ‘Fetch’ reflects the social areas which people use every day, and that we all take for granted.

Title:Xanadu

Description: Inspired by the unfinished Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem Kubla Khan, this vase is decorated with opium poppies on one side (the poet was medicated with laudanum and believed to have written it after a dream). Other imagery comes from descriptive passages in the poem plus Chinese and Mongolian motifs. There are the Khan's hunting leopards and a tortoise that might have been in the finished poem.
