New Artists and reviews
Kate’s recent work has been involved in land and seascapes and in particular the landscapes of Wales. Recently influenced by the walker and illustrator Wainwright she has been creating “books” which represent walks. Kate’s work has been selected for the British Glass Biennale 2017 and 2019 and she was awarded the Warm Glass Peoples prize 2019.
Having done Craig Mitchell Smith Poppy course in 2018, I made 3 poppies over the summer. One was sold to a friend the other 2 were commissions. I have 2 more commissions to have ready for Xmas (not poppies). I enjoy making Bob Leatherbarrow’s crackle bowls and a particularly like symmetry in my work, strip cutting being one of my favourite processes.
Have just completed a 3 day Pattern Making course with Ian Chadwick at the Glass Hub in Wiltshire which was truly amazing.
Karen has just completed a residency commission for Essex County Councl “A Crowd of Memories”. This was a collaborative installation with Rhoda Webb to collect memories from residents of a care home and create a hanging installation. It also involved running several school workshops to encourage year 11 and 12 pupils to engage in discussions with their own relatives.
The work can be seen at crowdofmemories.com
Kate’s glass commissions reflect her growing reputation and are situated in public buildings across Scotland. Highlights include the Patrick Geddes Memorial Panel for Edinburgh City Council headquarters and two windows for the Dunbeath Heritage centre. She has produced several school commissions including a memorial window in Loretto chapel, an internal panel at Merchiston Castle school and a panel at Dalkeith High school. Ecclesiastical windows include millennium windows at Longniddry and Dalbeattie churches and two windows in the Chapel of San Nazzario in Italy. In 2010 she reached a shortlist of three glass artists selected from the British Society of Master Glass Painters invited to design and make a stained-glass window to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for Southwark Cathedral in London.
She has also gained recognition and rewards for her painted work. She won the Cuthbert New Young Artist Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute annual exhibition and the Turcan Connell Award at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour annual exhibition.
She is an elected Associate Member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists and is an active member of the Scottish Glass Society, holding the post of Vice Chair in 2012 and Chair from 2013 to 2016.
My work is mostly kiln formed, although I have been experimenting with painting and enamelling, silk screen printing and glass casting. I am also interested in the pattern and texture of different textiles and this is often reflected in my glass designs. Some of my work was recently exhibited at Nucleus Art Cafe in Chatham, Kent.
