New Artists and reviews
I am an artist working predominantly through flameworking and sandcast glass. Glass has a unique quality unmatched by either painting or traditional sculpture. It is a special material which can be seen through, giving the visual artist the opportunity to describe concepts which would otherwise be ‘impossible’ to demonstrate through other materials. I use glass as an emblematic representation of things or ideas that are pure but precarious, delicate but destructible, eloquent yet elusive.
Kathryn works predominantly in blown glass, concentrating mainly on contemporary vessels and sculptural pieces. Commissions always welcome.
Laura established her practice in 1996 and since then has completed numerous large-scale projects across the UK. Recent commissions include a rotating sculpture at Midlands Arts Centre and a large suspended installation for John Lewis/Waitrose, Horsham. She recently exhibited new work in the ‘Northern Glass Innovations’ show and her work can also be seen at Cheeseburn Sculpture Park, Northumberland. The impact of light on health and well-being are the subject of her current research in partnership with Durham university.
I create large, contemporary fused art using inclusion and slumping techniques. My evolving themes are family, fluidity of water and natural forms in nature. Glass brings beautiful translucency unlike any other media. In 2022 I continue to evolve my creativity and have ventured into stained glass projects.
Colin’s designs although inspired by the beauty of the surrounding cotswolds are developed in the bench. His skill is manipulating the material to realise his and others designs.
Self taught as a glassmaker, Peter Layton’s work is organic and tactile, striving to achieve a form of controlled asymmetry. Series evolve by ‘sketching on the blowing iron’, in the belief that an understanding of the work is best achieved through making. An inveterate beachcomber, his work is often drawn from some aspect of nature or something observedwhile travelling.
As a recognised and accomplished glass artist Stewart is able to focus on limited edition and unique pieces which is what he enjoys making the most. In addition to this work, he produces glass for a range of customers and in various capacities.
