New Artists and reviews
Recent projects concern the concept of “leaving a trace”. A body of work I have called “Vestigium”.
Part of my research has involved taking casts from archaeological excavations – specifically the revealed surfaces of medieval and Tudor remains of Woking Palace (Henry VII’s family through his mother Margaret Beaufort).
I have been using the Yorkshire landscape as inspiration for textured glass and stained glass landscapes for the last 5 years. From large 30 cm x 30 cm pieces to small 10 cm x 5 cm pieces which use layers of clear glass and coloured glass frits. Each piece is a `one off` and never replicated.
Jo’s PhD had a transformative effect on her work. Her research combined new digital technologies and traditional kiln processes to precisely control complex form and imagery of air entrapment in glass, in ways which were not previously possible in kiln-forming. Recent exhibitions include ‘CGS at 25 Years: Then, Now, the Future’ at Stourbridge Glass Museum and the British Glass Biennale, 2022. Her piece ‘Deconstructed Being IV’ was selected for the International Exhibition of Glass 2022, Kanazawa, Japan, where it received the prize ‘Honourable Mention’. Jo works from her studio in Newcastle and is also a technician at the National Glass Centre.
The sea, especially where the water runs into land is an important source of inspiration for me. I also like to make pieces that have a historic or art based theme. Most recently, I’ve started making garden sculptures. Again, the themes are either rooted in nature or the pieces are representations of historical figures or literary characters.
in 2019 I have started many fusing projects with my kiln. As an example I produced some vases, dishes and wall decorations.
But I’m also creating lamps, mirrors, suncatchers … with stained glass.
